Shlag Lab, experts in artisanal screen printing

In this newly established workshop at the Viaduc des Arts, various art forms come together: screen printing on a range of materials (textiles, wood, glass, paper, earthenware, etc.) and the creation of original designs in limited editions. All work is carried out using traditional methods and with the utmost craftsmanship.
Shlag Lab: workshop and publishing house
Don’t be put off by the name, which is a nod to the slang term ‘schlag’—meaning ‘useless’ or ‘lazy’—and to fab labs, those ultra-modern workshops that rely on technology to create: at Shlag Lab, it is seriousness, professionalism and craftsmanship that take precedence. This is evidenced by the long list of prestigious clients who have placed their trust in the company over its thirteen years of existence: Chanel, Dior, Dom Pérignon, Honda, Deezer, Editions du Seuil, the École Boulle… as well as renowned artists and craftspeople such as Anne Gelbard, Melek Zertal, Quentin Gomzé and Karla Sutra.“
“We learnt on the job, first in a small workshop set up in Essonne during our spare time, then full-time,” says Samuel Sébaon, president of SHLG and co-founder of Shlag Lab alongside Virgile Marquis and Adrien Apoteker. Over the years, Shlag Lab has become more professional, honing its skills and acquiring valuable expertise.
Alongside his screen-printing workshop, Samuel Sébaon has opened a small publishing house, giving free rein to his artistic flair and enabling him to collaborate with artists from all walks of life. Some of his works are produced in limited editions and sold directly or at trade fairs, such as his incredible collection of prints. Others are exhibited in prominent venues such as the Arab World Institute and the Palais du Musée de l’Histoire de l’Immigration.
Traditional, artisanal printing
“Our philosophy is all about people,” Samuel Sebaeon is keen to emphasise. After studying advertising, he had originally set his sights on a career as an art director but eventually changed course to devote himself entirely to traditional screen printing. “The touch, the dexterity, the feel of the material in your hands… That’s what I’m looking for in my work,” he continues. So, out go modern printing technologies.
In his workshop, Samuel Sebaeon favours traditional, artisanal methods, where the human touch is at the heart of the process. Using direct inking, he is able to print on all types of textiles with great precision whilst enhancing the colours. “More intense, even on dark fabrics, they last longer,” explains the screen printer.
Shlag Lab also specialises in flatbed screen printing, with a vast range of possibilities: large-format printing on paper, fabric, adhesive, cardboard, wood, glass, earthenware… Almost no surface is off limits.
Unique projects
Thanks to its experience and expertise in screen printing, Shlag Lab has earned the trust of many renowned artists and brands. Several of the projects it has worked on have left their mark on its history.
“Every project is unique, and no two days are the same,” says Samuel Sébaon. “Each time, we create, adapt and innovate, as was the case, for example, with Honda.”
In 2022, Honda France commissioned Shlag Lab for an extraordinary project: to retrace the story of its failure at the 24 Hours of Le Mans motorcycle race through 24 original screen prints. With a unique twist: using the engine oil from the motorcycle that competed to create the ink for these screen prints. This campaign, aptly titled “The Beautiful Fail”, was exhibited at the Deux Roues motor show in Lyon in February 2023. It was an instant success. To date, it is the most successful social media campaign ever run by Honda France on social media.
